Marokko: Marrakech trolleybus disaster
A great idea - a TRT (trolleybus rapid transit system) for the city of Marrakech opened in 2017 - came to an abruptly stop, when a truck damaged parts of overhead as well as feeder cables on 22. March 2022.
Generally speaken there were more troubles with the trolleybuses as well as with infrastructure. Problems of overhead construction can be seen by experts with the naked eye and it would be no big problem to solve this. But up to now, the city of Marrakech as well as the management of the TRT system deny any help from interational organisations as well as experts.
When visiting Marrakech in August 2022 there was no sign of repair works or other positive works towards rebuilding the system and bring it back to work for the benefit of the city, which suffers from a very substandard public transport with only a few buslines. The TRT system being not in service, there is no replacement operation so people have to use taxis or other forms of transport. 6 of 15 Dongfeng Yangtse trolleybuses are stored at a small depot at Massira terminus - which even is locked and closed.
There is still the hope, that the responsible politicians and managers use their chance to develope a modern, fast and clean transport system fort he benefit of their wonderful, historic city.
